Away We Go

We arrived safely in San Francisco last night and have since had the very best outlaw sibling tour guides. :)

Gabe and I started our day by catching a boat to Alcatraz.

Gabe on the Alcatraz cruise ship

Last time I was in San Francisco, we weren't able to go to Alcatraz because the tickets were sold out. Like me, Gabe had never been, so we pre-booked our tickets and caught the 9:30am cruise.

The Cellblock
You wander around the island with a ranger or by yourself. Tours led by rangers, by audio, and by guide book are available to all visitors. We did an audio tour of the cell block (narrated by past guards and inmates) and caught a ranger talk.
My dad has a cooler truck, but this one was still interesting

The island is beautiful -- I wasn't expecting to see the abundance of flora and fauna...or gull colonies!
Calla lilies grew everywhere

One of the few view spots prisoners may have had

Alcatraz was amazing -- I highly recommend this tour for everyone, local and tourist alike. I loved being immersed in this history and the stories in the audio tour.

After Alcatraz we had to go and grab food, so we went to The Mission for burritos and to meet up with Outlaw J. We ended up wandering around The Mission area, checking out all the cool stores (from pirate gear to taxidermy and -- of course -- books) and shopping. We may have bought a few more books for our library...

After we had hiked all over the place (including stumbling upon Delores Park in The Mission at 4:24pm...where we found the whole park covered in a low-lying smoke...check the date) we went back to the downtown core and hit up the Tonga Room in the Fairmont Hotel for Happy Hour.

Two other outlaws, M and B, joined us there for the tail-end of Happy Hour.

Festive B

The Tonga Room was great. :) Lightening, rain, and all! In BC we never had Happy Hour, so the whole buy-alchohol-for-cheaper thing is pretty novel.

Enjoying our cold drinks

Tomorrow will either feature art museums or wine country. What choices we have to make, eh? :)
